A REVIEW OF DIESEL SPILL ON WET ROAD: THE EXTENT OF MIXING, SPREADING AND CLEAN-UP PROCESSES

A.M Hassan, C.M Elinge, Gado A..

Abstract

The studies and clean-up of diesel oil on wet road for safety and environmental concerns cannot be ignored. This article evaluates the spreading and wetting phenomenon of spilled diesel oil on wet road in curse of processing, transportation or storage as well as possible clean-up processes. Looking at initial spreading coefficient(s) in three phase system (Diesel/Water/Air) and four phase system (Diesel/Water/Air/Road surface). Effects of diesel oil compositions, interfacial tension, surface tension, water heights and contact angles on spreading and wetting of diesel oil on wet road are evaluated. Furthermore, clean-up processes such as the application of emulsion breakers and inhibitors, recovery enhancers and biodegradation agents are also studied.

Key words: Diesel spill, wet road, spreading, clean-up
