PHYTOCHEMICAL AND ANTIBACTERIAL SCREENING OF THE EXTRACTS OF WATER LILLY (Nymphaea lotus)

Abstract

The antibacterial potency of aqueous and ethanolic extract of water lily (Nymphaea lotus) portions were determined invitro against two bacterial isolates (Staphyloccocus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) by agar diffusion method. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloid, flavanoid, saponin glycosides, tannin, steroid and volatile oil, carbohydrate and protein. The phytochemical constituent of the water lily portion were in the range of 0.02 ± 0.002 to 0.100 ± 0.001 mg percentage, the tannin content was higher in both leaves and seeds. The ethanol extract of water lily are more potent against Pseudomonas aeruginosa with minimum zone of growth inhibition ranging from 14.67 ± 1.16 mm to 17.00 ± 1.00 mm at 90 and 120 mg/ml respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the aqueous and ethanolic extract of water lily against Staphyloccocus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was 60 mg/ml and 90 mg/ml respectively. Higher minimum bacteriacidal concentration (MBC) of 120 mg/ml was observed against Pseudomonas aeruginosa for the ethanolic extract. The MBC for the both the aqueous and ethanolic extracts was 90 mg/ml and 120 mg/ml respectively. This findings therefore support the traditional medicinal use of water lily.
