Factors affecting scheduling of elective surgeries in a Private Hospital, Islamabad, Pakistan

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the factors affecting scheduling of elective surgeries in a private hospital in Islamabad.
Methodology: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at Rawal General & Dental Hospital, Islamabad from July 2019 to February 2020. Data were collected on a structured close ended questionnaire through interviewing. The demographic profile, frequency of responses regarding different factors affecting scheduling related to surgeons, surgery, and patients were assessed.
Results: Out of 54 respondents, 91% were qualified surgeons with 76% male and 14% females. The response in ‘yes’ towards various factors that affect scheduling of surgery was; patient load (100%), age of surgeon (87%), experience of surgeon (96%) qualification of surgeon (79%), duration of surgery (96%), type of surgical procedure (93%), complexity of surgery (89%), type of anesthesia (80%), availability of required surgical instruments (100%), innovation/ application of new surgical procedure (94%), medical comorbidities of patient (96%) and age of the patient (80%).
Conclusion: Elective surgery scheduling was affected by various factors that were related to surgeons, surgery, and patients. It is recommended that while scheduling surgeries, important factors must be considered. It is recommended that workshops and seminars be conducted on the surgery scheduling.
