Fatty liver and chronic hepatitis C: are they partners in crime?

Abstract

Chronic hepatitis C is a common disease all over the world including Pakistan. Non alcoholic fatty liver disease also is a very common disease worldwide,1 as well as in Pakistan.2 Previous studies have shown strong association of fatty liver disease with chronic hepatitis C.3 This association has significant clinical implications. Hepatitis C influences development of hepatic steatosis especially in genotype-III, although other genotypes also have steatosis.4 Fatty liver disease develops in patients who have obesity and various manifestation of metabolic syndrome. This has also significant implications on the course and treatment of hepatitis C, as patients who have steatosis, they develop increasing degree of fibrosis.1,4
