Background: Type 2 diabetes (formerly called non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset) results from the bodys ineffective use of insulin and is responsible for 90% of people with diabetes around the world. Healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight, and avoiding tobacco use can prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. 50% of people with diabetes die of cardiovascular disease.
Objectives: The objectives of this study were to know the prevalence of diagnosed case of diabetes mellitus among adults and its association with various sociodemographic factors.
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was done; the total sample size was 3600. Of total 14 wards, 6 wards were selected by simple random sampling; out of each selected ward, 600 people were taken by house-to-house visit.
Results: The prevalence of diagnosed cases of diabetes was 4.94% in the study population. The prevalence of diabetes increased significantly with increasing age. There was no significant association between gender, religion, types of family, dietary pattern, and the prevalence of diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes was higher among lower socioeconomic class and illiterate.
Conclusion: People suffering from diabetes should be informed by the treating doctors about regular checkups, dietary modifications, exercise, foot care, regular treatment, early notice of complications, etc., which will go a long way in the management and quality of life of the patient.
