Assessment of work-related hazards and compliance measures among doctors working at a tertiary care hospital, Lahore, Pakistan

Objective: To assess the exposure of work-related hazards and safety compliance measures among doctors at tertiary care hospital, Lahore, Pakistan.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study included 171 doctors through non-probability convenient sampling at a tertiary care hospital, Lahore. A pretested, structured questionnaire was used to assess the socio-demographic profile, exposure to work-related hazard, and safety compliance measures taken by doctors through Google Forms. Data were analyzed on SPSS version 26.
Results: Out of 171 participants, 94(55%) were males. The most common hazard reported by 118(69%) was heat among physical hazards, followed by spillage of biological samples such as blood 84 (60.8%). In chemical hazards, formaldehyde exposure was commonest as reported by 90(62%). Sharp-related injuries were experienced by 84(49.1%). Gender, working overtime and non-use of PPE were significantly related to accidents and spillage hazards. Doctors from the Surgical and Allied departments reported being exposed to most of the work-related hazards. Doctors from Diagnostics departments (radiology and pathology) (65.2%) reported the highest compliance with safety guidelines and protocols.
Conclusion: Doctors were exposed to work-related hazards such as physical, chemical, and sharp-related injuries. Furthermore, preventive measures were insufficient.
