Abstract

A 40 year old woman was admitted with dysphagia and bilateral cervical lymph node enlargement. A fine needle aspiration (FNA) of the cervical lymph node showed atypical epithelial cells which necessitated a FNA biopsy from the thyroid gland. The thyroid FNA appearance was similar to the lymph node which gave clues about thyroid medullary carcinoma (TMC). After complete clinical and laboratory investigations, sporadic medullary carcinoma of thyroid gland was diagnosed. Histologic examination revealed the characteristic features of TMC. We applied CEA, chromogranin A and NSE to paraffin sections. Clinical, histopathological findings and prognostic parameters were discussed.

Key Words: Thyroid, Medullary Carcinoma.
