Abstract

The infection of intestinal parasites usually occurs primarly via ingestion of eggs and cysts of parasites by fecaloral

route, directly from human to human. Thus the staff dealing with food are important as porter.

Since the kitchen of Inonu University Faculty of Medicine is a unit in which the hygienic control measures are

applied strictly, up to now, there have been no outbreaks among the personnel originating from the kitchen. The

aim of this study is to detect the rate of intestinal parasites in the kitchen personnel and to demonstrate the

importance of hygienic control measures.

In this study, 52 personnel working in the kitchen of Inonu University Faculty of Medicine were evaluated for

intestinal parasites. Intestinal parasites were found in eight (15%) of the 52 personnel.

It is suggested that, the kitchen personnel who may take role in the spread of intestinal parasites and affect the

population health should be screened periodically.
