Introduction: The rate of breast cancer, the most common cancer in women, is increasing day by day. Nowadays for the early diagnosis of breast cancer, a common language is a necessity between concerned disciplines. In this case, we started to use the BIRADS lexicon in our country also.In this study we aim to share our clinical experience about BIRADS 3 and BIRADS 4 lesions.
Material and method: In this prospectively planned study, the patients who were examined between January 2005 and June 2008 in 2nd general surgery policlinic of Dışkapı Yıldırım Beyazıt Training and Research Hospital and classified as BIRADS 3 and 4 after breast USG and mammography were included.
Findings: The median age was 42.8 (18-76). Our average follow up time was 19 months. While 1 of 48 BIRADS 3 classified patients was found malignant (2.1%), the 22 of 49 BIRADS 4 classified patients were malignant (44.8%). BIRADS 4 lesions’ rate increased parallel to the increase in age. Considering pathologic data, BIRADS lexicon was 95.7% sensitive and 63.5% spesific.
Conclusion: Despite the variable results, the malignancy rates of BIRADS 3 and 4 lesions were 2-11% and 25-67%. Our results were similar to the ones in the literature and the difference between groups was statistically significant. BIRADS 3 lesions can be followed up once in every 6 months periods because of low cancer risks. But BIRADS 4 lesions should be biopsied with an appropriate method since half of them were malignant.
