Rectal foreign bodies: A case series from Pakistan

Abstract

Objective: To present our experience of wide variety of Rectal Foreign Bodies along with the surgical interventions taken to manage them.
Methodology: It was a cross-sectional prospective case series conducted in the surgical unit of Ghulam Mohammad Mahar Medical College and Hospital, Sukkur, Pakistan from January to December 2017. Patient characteristics, clinical features and management of all patients with rectal foreign bodies were analyzed using SPSS version 21.
Results: There were 25 patients with male to female ratio 9:1 and mean age of 39.5 years. Seven (35%) of these had voluntary injuries for sexual gratification and 13 cases (65%) were of involuntary injuries. Intestinal obstruction was diagnosed in 9 (45%), rectal perforation in 2 (10%), rectal mucosal injury in 3 (15%), and perianal injury in 6 (30%). Patients with intestinal obstruction and rectal perforation were managed with laparotomy while the ones with rectal mucosal and perianal injuries were managed with rectal dilation and extraction of the FB under general anesthesia.
Conclusion: Rectal foreign body presents as a diagnostic, evaluation, and management dilemma. Its most common etiology is sexual stimulation. Most cases require rectal extraction and exploratory laparotomy. Psychological status of all these patients must be evaluated and relevant consultation should be provided.
