The possible side-effects of cercaria antigen preparations (CAP), soluble worm antigen preparations (SWAP), soluble egg antigen (SEA), native snail antigens (NSA) and radiated Biomphalaria alexandrina snail antigens (RSA) on lactate dehydrogenase and its isoenzymes, as well as hepatocytes viability, worm burden and number of ova were investigated. Results showed that highly significant decreases in lactate dehydrogenase activity were noticed in both infected and pre-immunized infected mice than the control group. The effect of the studied antigens on the isoenzymatic pattern of lactate dehydrogenase in pre-immunized mice revealed a highly significant increase in LDH4, whereas a highly significant decrease in LDH5 was recorded in all studied groups as compared with the control group. The three isoenzymes (LDH1, LDH2 and LDH3) show different values in their percentage contribution as compared to the control group. The studies revealed that vaccination of mice with different Schistosoma mansoni antigens protect them against schistosomiasis through the improvement of liver lactate dehydrogenase and its isoenzymes without any side-effects.
