IN VITRO EFFECT OF AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF THE BARK MELIA ZEDARACH AGAINST ADULT EARTHWORM LUMBRICUS TERRESTRIS AND THE AMPHIBIAN NEMATODE FALCAUSTRA HEOSEMYDIS

Fatin A.A. Mustafa.

Abstract

Aqueous extract of the bark Melia zedarach was tested against the adult earthworm Lumbricus terrstris and as anthelminthic against amphibian nematode Falcaustra heosemydis in vitro. Albendazole was used as standard reference. Various concentrations (10, 20, and 40 mg/ml) of the aqueous extract were tested in the bioassay, which involved the determination of time of paralysis and time of death of the worms. A highly significant effect was recorded at highest concentration of (40 mg/ml).

Key words: Melia zedarach, Lumbricus terrstris, Falcaustra heosemydis, Albendazole earthworm, nematode, in vitro.
