This paper attempts to identify patterns of development in the Turkish economy during 1950-1994 period in order to evaluate the dimensions of its structural transformation. The main findings of the quantitative analysis indicate that Turkish structural transformation in terms of development processes was lagged during 1950-1980. But restructuring efforts in both domestic demand and production on the one hand and, especially in the structure of trade on the other in 1980s leaded Turkish structural development to conform cross-country norms, predicted for a country of its size and income level, in general. The sectoral composition of labour, however, has still remained below the cross-country norms even in post-1980 period. Therefore, the necessity and the urgency of coping with the improvement in the reallocation of labour force of the country is obvious.
