Role of foot orthosis in management of planter fascitis

Abstract

Background planter fasciitis is the one of the most common complaints prevailing in the community. The aim of this observational study was to evaluate the effectiveness of foot Orthosis in management of planter fasciitis and reduction in pain after using the foot orthosis
Methods By using the purposive and convenient sampling technique the observational study was conducted from December 2011 to February 2012. The duration of follow up for each patient was 3 or 4 weeks after giving the foot Orthosis in the patients of planter fasciitis. 40 patients with planter fasciitis were recruited from community, General hospital and services hospital, and were provided with suitable Orthosissuch as sham Orthosis(soft thin heel pad foam), prefabricated Orthosis(firm foam) and customized Orthosis(semi rigid plastic)
Results After 3 months of treatment, estimates of effects on pain and function favored the use of foot Orthosis72 percent patients used the foot Orthosis and 85 percent patients felt the significant reduction in pain on pain scale. The P value for pain before treatment and pain after treatment is 0 .000. This is less than 0.05.So it is concluded that the foot Orthosisis a helpful in management of Planter fasciitis as it considerably reduces the pain.
Conclusions
Foot Orthosis are effective in management of planter fasciitis. It reduced the pain produced by planter fasciitis and thus increases the functional capacity of patients.
