Surgical Management of Cerebrovascular Disease (Carotid Endarterectomy)

Abstract

Carotid endarterectomy were performed in 22 patients in İstanbul Medical Faculty, Department of General Surgery, Peripheric Vascular Unit between 1988-1993.
Six of the patients were female (% 23), 20 of the patients were male (% 77). Youngest was 27 and oldest was 73 years old (mean 62 years) Arteriography was performed in ali of the patients and 8 of the patients were investigated by Duplex US also. 24 patients (92 %) have Transient lschaemic Attack (TIA). 8 patients had stroke. We didn't performed any operation to 4 patients. 22 patients (84.7 %) received a carotid endarterectomy asa surgical procedure. Carotid artery were clamped for a of mean 22 minutes.

In the postoperative period, 1 of patients had TIA and other patient had a epileptic episode,probably due to brain swelling. in late follo w-up, 1 patients developed totaı•occlusion,and 1 patients had 50 % stenosis. 1 patients was lost after MI.

We condlude that, the aim of carotid endarterectomy must be keep away the patients from the stroke.
